Let's break it down

How it works

Vitamin B12 or cobalamin is a water-soluble vitamin that can be obtained in the diet mostly from animal protein products. Vitamin B12 is essential for the normal function of all cells in the body and like other B vitamins, B12 helps to transform the food you eat into energy your cells can use. B12 plays a role in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Dietary Boost

Vitamin B12 is naturally found in animal products, including fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products. Vitamin B12 is generally not present in plant foods, but fortified breakfast cereals are a readily available source of vitamin B12 with high bioavailability for vegetarians. A diet lacking quality animal proteins and products (including red meat, poultry, seafood and dairy) or B12 fortified foods may contribute to reduced B12 intake from dietary sources. Individuals who follow a vegan or vegetarian style diet may choose to include an additional source of B12 daily.
